Out into the hiking paradise of the southern Black Forest

Hiking boots should definitely be on your packing list for your vacation with us in the Glottertal. There are a good 900 meters of altitude to conquer if you start right on our doorstep and the 1,204 m high Kandel summit is your destination. If you want to give yourself a head start, you can take the bus to St. Peter and start directly at 716 m above sea level. Public transport is free for you. We recommend the best tours and most beautiful viewpoints. How about a hike to the wind turbines on the Rosskopf? From the observation tower there, you have a panoramic view across the Rhine valley to the Dreisamtal. On the way, you will pass the Streckereck - here you have a unique view through the Föhrental valley to the Glottertäler vineyards.

Slow living in a dreamlike landscape

Vineyards, forests and meadows nestle close together in the Glottertal valley. A walk is often all that is needed to lose yourself in nature. Simply stroll along the winegrowers' path below the Schlossberg and Eichberg vineyards - what could be better? This is where locals and travelers meet. If you fancy cooling off on a hot day, you can stroll along the Glotter river in the shade of the trees. There are various places where you can jump into the rippling waters of the stream. You will find our very own riverside promenade directly behind the Schlossmühle. Even the walk from the honesty bar to your deckchair is a nature experience.

Road cycling tours

Demanding routes in all directions

When starting out on your road bike at the schlossmühle, you have plenty of choices: the peaks of the Black Forest await you on the right, the expanses of the Rhine valley on the left. Are you looking for a challenge? The 1204 m high Kandel is the landmark mountain of the Glottertal valley. With an average ascent of 8.2% over 12 kilometers, the north-west approach from Waldkirch is considered the toughest mountain in the southern Black Forest by road cyclists. Freiburg's Schauinsland and the Feldberg summit also offer opportunities for tours with many meters of elevation gain. In between, idyllic Black Forest valleys and panoramic mountain ranges await you. The view extends from the French Vosges mountains to the Swiss Alps. Across the Rhine valley with a detour through the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl, Alsace is within reach. It is 55 kilometers to Colmar. Or you can take the 70-kilometre route south, through the Markgräflerland region, always along the Rhine to Basel. Here you can also hop on the train with your bike for the journey home. The train ride is even free of charge for you thanks to our guest card.

Panoramic peaks and challenging trails

In recent years, the dynamic mountain bike community around Freiburg has ensured the development of a variety of trails in the southern Black Forest. You can choose from tours of varying degrees of difficulty. Always included: the impressive landscape of the Black Forest - through pristine forests, along lakes and to magnificent viewpoints. For example, start right outside our hotel door, up to the Rosskopf. Here you can enjoy the panoramic view from the Friedrichsturm tower before descending to Freiburg via the "Boarderline" or "Baden to the Bone" trail. From there, you return to the Glottertal valley via the Wildtalereck.

Learn to love winter in the Black Forest

The scenic charms of the southern Black Forest have a special magic in winter. The best way to explore it is on cross-country skis or snowshoes. To make sure you have enough snow under your feet, you have to start a few meters higher up than in Glottertal - but thanks to the free local transport, this is easy to do. The Thurnerspur is one of the most beautiful cross-country ski trails in Germany and can be reached in half an hour. Here you run through secluded forests and moors, over panoramic heights and past snow-covered Black Forest farms. Don't have any cross-country skiing experience yet? No problem: there are also routes for beginners and you can hire equipment from local sports stores. And if there is no snow? Then you can make unlimited use of the diverse network of trails for hikes and walks.
